Highlife Music - the fusion of African traditional rhythms, Latin/Caribbean melodies and Big Band Swing Jazz. In its heyday, in the 1950s and early 1960s, it dominated West Africa's ballrooms and dance halls, and could truly be termed West Africa’s musical lingua franca
This concert shall showcase the works of the greatest Highlife composers spanning a century of the genre. From early Palmwine Guitar and Ragtime Blues, on to the golden age of Big Band Highlife. With a lecture in performance by historian Nze Ed Keazor and a film presentation: ‘Konkombe Afrobeat’ by legendary British filmmaker Jeremy Marre.
All of these performed by the West African Highlife Collective - returning to Oti.’s Place after 6 years – a global gathering of some of Highlife's finest living veterans, from iconic ensembles of legends like Victor Olaiya, Fela Kuti, E.C Arinze, Roy Chicago, Rex Lawson, Peter King and Bala Miller. The collective has in its various forms, graced some of the finest stages on two continents, with a long-standing residency at the Africa Centre, London and performances at the Festivals in Europe to a large, growing audience. Also, at selected mainframe events in Nigeria, including Felabration, Lights Camera Africa!!! etc

Benson Idonije
And join us in celebrating the 90th birthday celebration of the legend Benson Idonije - veteran broadcaster, Nigerian jazz historian and, first manager of Fela Kuti. Mr Idonije, alongside Lindsay Barrett, was one of the first presenters of Jazz music on Nigeria, with the iconic stereo Jazz Club, on NBC Radio for 30 years from the 1960s.
He was also one of Nigeria’s first superstar Disco Dj’s operating out of the iconic Hot Spot Club, Lagos Island. He is also the grandfather and mentor of Afrobeats Superstar- Burna Boy.
